History and origin of Java

The only disadvantage of C++ was that it was more dependent on type of compilers. It was a difficult task to run it on any compiler  Hence, a new programming language was needed which could run in any given environment. Also, there was a need of language for World Wide Web (WWW) which was growing quickly.  Web required a language which could be platform independent and at the same time efficient.

Java was invented at Sun Micro systems  Inc. in 1991 by James Gosling, Patrick Naughton, Chris Warth, Ed Frank, and Mike Sheridan. At the time of invention the language was called as Oak. However, in 1995, the word Java was given to it. Java is surely influenced by C and C++, but is not an extension of these two languages. Java is a programmer’s language and it is logically consistent providing full control to the programmer. Java can be called as a language for the Internet.
