To check drive for errors, automatically fix file system errors in Windows 7, follow the below given steps:
1) Click on Start.
2) Then, click on Computer.
3) Under Hard Disk Drives, right-click on the drive for which you want to check for errors and then click on Properties.
4) In Local Disk Properties dialog box, go to Tools tab. Then, click on “Check Now” button under Error checking.
5) Check disk options:
i) Automatically fix file system errors: Check this option to automatically fix file system errors in your computer.
ii) Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors: Check this option to recover information from bad sectors in your computer.
Click on Start button.
6) For the dialog box, “Windows can’t check the disk while it’s in use”, click on “Force a dismount” to dismount this drive.
7) Now, the drive will be checked for errors. You need to wait for some time.
After the disk is scanned you will get a message “Your device or disk was successfully scanned”. You can click on the See details button to view the details of the scan. Click on Close button. Your drive is now ready for use.
