Classification of scanners based on their construction: Desktop, Sheet Fed, Handheld and Drum Scanners

  1. Desktop Scanners: These are the most common kind of scanners which are used these days. You will find them almost everywhere in offices and organizations.
  2. Sheet Fed Scanners: In this type of scanners the image which has to be scanned moves and the scan head is static.
  3. Handheld Scanners: This type of scanner doesn’t have a moving belt. Handheld scanners don’t produce a high quality output.
  4. Drum Scanners: Drum scanners use a PMT (photo multiplier tube) to capture sharp and detailed images. This type of scanner uses a sensor to scan the images.
